I am Karen McCleave, a Greater Toronto-area lawyer with a passion for community service. I have witnessed how small, kind gestures can move forward in ways that aren’t always expected. Moments that feel simple can lead to outcomes that materialize on a broader scale much later and in unique places.

A simple act of kindness can take many forms. Mentoring someone who needs help. Volunteering at a local charity. Supporting an organization that benefits the community. As Maya Angelou so famously observed: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Why So Much Impact Gets Ignored
A lot of meaningful contributions are done privately. Quiet efforts rarely receive recognition. Consistent involvement usually happens in the background of ordinary life. A steady presence can impact results in ways that are easy to ignore. The value of showing up regularly reveals itself through the lives that are touched throughout the process.
Many meaningful contributions never become public. A consistent eagerness to help carries more weight than one-off, splashy gestures. Ask any leader of a not-for-profit if they have unsung heroes in their midst. You will hear many names.
Community Service Without the Spotlight
A strong commitment to service doesn’t depend on recognition. A lot of people continue giving their time and energy without needing attention. Focus stays on the work itself and the people who benefit from it. That mindset reflects a stronger connection to the community. Service becomes part of daily life and not a separate activity.
Having a servant’s heart, I’ve always believed that service holds its value even when no one is watching. The intention behind giving matters equally as much as the outcome, especially when the work is done quietly and consistently.
